C’est au détour d’une pochette de 45T du groupe Sinner Sinners que le travail de Reno m’a sauté, sans prévenir, à la figure. Un petit tour sur son site et là c’est carrément une œuvre inédite (allez mater les grattes) que je découvre, si vous ajoutez à cela que le jeune a fait un passage par HawaiSurf….il fallait de ce pas que je l’interroge ! .

Bonjour, évidemment, comme toute interview du CrewK une première question obligatoire, on écoute quoi quand on arrive chez toi ?

Wooow, ça c'est dur car ça change tous les jours... mais disons qu'il y a quand même souvent Valient Thorr et Converge qui reviennent sur la platine... Hellacopters également à fond!!!

Tu peux nous en dire un peu plus sur toi, qui es tu, d’où viens tu, que fais tu ?

Et bien je suis Renaud SAUZEDDE, alias Wild Reno, Je suis graphiste depuis quelques années, j'ai fait mes début dans un shop de Glisse bien connu des passionnés sur Paname: "HawaiiSurf". J'y ai fait mes classes et y ai choppé beaucoup d'influs dans la culture skateboard qui a toujours été très productive! Je suis aujourd'hui mon propre patron, associé avec mon meilleur pôte. Nous avons créés notre propre marque de guitare, Wild Customs. Je m'occupe donc entre autre de toute la partie com', ce qui me permet de faire ce que j'aime pour la bonne cause! Je réalise du coup tous les visus de notre marque et du coup également pas mal de pochettes de disques et affiches de concert pour les groupes qui gravitent autour de nous.

Quand as-tu commencé à crayonner ? As-tu suivi un cursus particulier par la suite ou t es tu formé à force seul à force de dessiner dans les marges ?

J'ai toujours été attiré par le dessin mais aussi par l'univers du LOGO et des marques. Mais il est aussi vrai que je n'ai malheureusement pas suivi de formation ni d'études dans cette branche. Simplement parce qu'à l'époque je ne savais pas que cela existait ni comment cela pouvait il bien s'appeler, ni même qu'il était envisageable de vivre d'un métier de "créatif". Un Graphiste, c'est quoi?.. un graffeur, je connaissais! Je me suis donc orienté sur des études d'aménagement de l'environnement puis réorienté sur le management et le commerce. Mais le destin vous rattrape toujours, et c'est assez naturellement que je suis passé d'un poste de vendeur dans le shop à celui d'assistant en PAO. A force de bidouiller, ils ont fini par me mettre au détourage, puis à me faire réaliser une newsletter, puis deux, puis une Pub, etc... pour en arriver à des promodels de boards de skate! J'ai donc appris le boulot sur le tas et j'en suis extrêmement reconnaissant à l'équipe qui me l'a permis et qui m'a donné ma chance. En parallèle, du fait d'avoir jouer dans un groupe de rock, j'ai également toujours dû essayer de bidouiller des bout de pochettes pour les démos et des affiches pour les concerts ce qui m'avait également bien mis le pied à l'étriller.

Aujourd’hui tu en vis ou tu as une autre activité à coté ?

Je ne vis pas de mon étiquette de graphiste, mais dans un sens c'est pas plus mal car ça me permet de ne faire que ce que j'aime et de garder beaucoup de liberté dans mes travaux. Quand on doit manger, c'est extrêmement difficile de pouvoir ne faire que ce que l'on aime! Je ne suis donc pas ultra productif car j'ai beaucoup d'autres choses à gérer pour faire progresser notre entreprise, mais je suis libre!

Collabores tu à des journaux/ fanzines ou publications régulières ?

Non, je n'ai jamais eut cette occasion là, mais qui sait ce que nous réserve l'avenir.

Quelle est ta journée travail type, si il y en a une...

Je dépose mon plus grand fils à la maternelle, je trace au bureau où je répond au mails... c'est une grosse partie de mon tafs car nous fonctionnons beaucoup par le web! Après c'est freestyle en fonction des choses à faire; ça passe de la compta, au ponçage de guitare, à la recherche et aux commandes de nouvelles pièces de guitares et heureusement souvent aussi à la bidouille sur Illustrator pour faire de nouveaux Logos, visus pour Wild ou pour les potes ,et développer de nouvelles idées pour de futurs affiches. Le soir retour à la maison et bien souvent entre deux Calins de mes fistons je continu de répondre aux mails de nos clients et je crayonne ou bidouille cet Illustrator que j'aime tant!

D’où provient ton inspiration ? Y a-t-il des artistes/graphistes qui ont compté pour toi (en langage rock, quelles sont tes influences) ?

Il est clair que mes deux plus grandes influs sont Shepard Fairey (Obey) et Jim Phillips. J'adore aussi Stefan Doitschinoff (Calma), dans un style plus religieux sud américain. J'adore aussi John Dyer Baizley qui en plus d'être un artiste fantastique (style art nouveau mais en plus dark), est le guitariste de l'un de mes groupes favoris, Baroness. Mais il est vrai que ce ne sont que les plus connus dans un océans de graphistes/artistes qui déchirent littéralement tout! Il y a tant de gars qui ont un pur style et de très belles idées... c'est cette diversité et cette masse qui sont intéressant et qui font que l'on prend du plaisir constamment à découvrir de nouvelles affiches!

Quelles sont les principales étapes dans ton travail (du croquis au final) ?

Je crayonne tout d'abord le coeur de mon affiche, c'est à dire l'élément principal, le thème, les "fioritures". Ensuite, un grand coup de scan, puis je tatonne le reste sur Illustrator petit à petit... j'y passe beaucoup de temps, je pense que si j'avais suivi une formation, je serais plus organisé et plus pro dans mon avancement et ma méthode!... mais des fois un peu de filling, de freestyle, ça fait du bien, ça donne de l'âme aux choses!

Tu fais tout à la main ou à l'informatique ?

Du coup un meu des deux, j'essaie d'en faire de plus en plus à la main! Je souhaite à l'avenir me lancer dans le tattoo (j'ai un peu commencé), du coup, c'est important de dessiner et de continuer de travailler à la "mano"! D'ailleurs, entre parenthèse, il est vrai que toute la culture tattoo, Kustom et rock n roll est une super influence également!

Au final, combien de temps nécessite la réalisation d'une affiche ?

Là c'est une question de fou! franchement c'est un coup à me faire arrêter, je ne préfère pas y penser!!! "Lol" comme on dit! Je ne sait pas... mais longtemps, trop s'il fallait en vivre.

Qui s'occupe de réaliser les sérigraphies ?

J'ai un petit sérigraphe bien cool au bout de la rue où se trouve l'atelier, mais il est vrai qu'à l'occaz j'aimerai bien tout faire tout seul... on verra à la retraite!

Tu as un style très caractéristique, tu ne fais que ce dont tu as envie, ou bien si demain on te demande une huile de chevaux qui courent dans la mer sur fond de soleil couchant, il n'y a pas de problème t'es sur le coup ?

La réponse est forcément non! Je ne fais que ce que j'aime, bien sûr, j'essai de m'adapter à la demande, mais je veux garder un max de liberté... n'ayant pas d'obligation, quand le thème ne me branche pas, je passe la main. Je pars du fait que si on bosse à contre coeur... on fait de la merde! Et on a le même raisonnement avec nos guitares!!!

Pour quels groupes as tu deja travaille ?

C'est principalement de l'indy, notamment "Picture Me Dead, Blondie", qui est le groupe de mon frère... c'est donc du travail plaisir. J'ai bosser pour Herscher (doom), Sofy Major (HxC Noise), Sinner Sinners (Horror Punk)... il y en a d'autres, pour l'instant je ne bosse que pour les potes, cela suffi largement à m'occuper!!!

Pour quel groupe reverais tu de travailler?

Je n'ai pas spécialement d'ambition à ce niveau là, je me contente de faire ce que j'aime, mais pour viser large, disons qu'une affiche pour Metallica ou Foo Fighters, ça me conviendrais plutôt bien!

C’est toi qui a choisi les groupes que tu illustres ou est ce un sujet imposé ?

Je choisi les groupes que j'illustre et généralement j'ai la main libre. Les gens me demande des affiches car il apprécient mon style et mes idées.

Qu'est-ce qui est le plus difficile dans la réalisation d’une affiche ?

...de ce dire stop j'arrête!

Considères tu que tu fasses partie d’une certaine « scène graphique », si oui qui d’autre, à tes yeux, la compose ?

Non je ne pense pas que j'appartienne à une certaine scène, je ne côtoie pas grand monde et ne m'expose pas spécialement, du coup c'est assez marginale comme démarche. Après peut être que mes créas font penser à certains autres artistes, je ne pense pas que cela soit évitable, mais de là à dire que je soit d'un style ou d'un autre, je ne sais pas...

Un peu d’autopromo, profites en c’est gratuit, où peut on admirer ton travail, sur le net et dans la vraie vie ?

Là du coup c'est principalement sur le site de Wild: wildcustoms.fr dans la rubrique Kustom Kulture ou sur notre Facebook où je remet régulièrement de nouveaux travaux. Pour ce qui est de voir mes affiches en vrai, je vais certainement leur réserver une place dans notre Showroom à Vichy dans les semaines avenir.

Le plus beau compliment que tu aies reçu dernièrement ?

Je veux que tu me tattoo! (alors que je n'ai encore tatouer qu'une pauvre typo sur ma cheville!). C'est certainement que les gens on confiance en moi de par mes créations, ça fait plaisir... mais quand même!

Qu’est ce que l’on peut te souhaiter pour la suite ?

 ...de finir par racheter Gibson avec Wild et de faire la couv' du prochain album de Foo fighters et la Guitare de Dave Grohl sur cet Album... ça va ça vous parait réalisable?

It was while looking at the Sinner Sinners record sleeve that Reno's work caught my attention. I decided to check out his website and what I found was an original piece of art (go check out the guitars, dudes!), adding the fact that this young man also used to work at Hawai Surf, I just needed to have a word or two with him.

Hi Reno, of course I have to ask you the mandatory question that appears in all Crew K interviews, what do we listen when we step into your home?

Wow, tough question since it changes every day...but we can say that you will certainly hear Valient Thorr and Converge...Hellacopters also, loud as it can be!

Can you tell us more about yourself? Who are you? Where are you from?

My name is Renaud Sauzedde, aka Wild Reno. I have been a graphic designer for a few years now. I started in a board sports shop well known by the surf culture lovers in Paris, Hawaisurf. I learned there and caught a very strong influence from the skateboarding culture that has always been very productive! I am now my own boss with my best friend as my partner. We have created our own brand of guitars, Wildcustoms. I handle among other all the communication part of it which enables me to do what i like for a good cause! I then design all the visuals for our label and at the same time a lot of record sleeves and posters for bands in our circle of friends.

When did you start drawing? have you followed a specific cursus or have you learned on your own?

I have always been attracted to drawing but also to everything around logos and brands. It is also true and unfortunate that I never had the chance to follow a course or a training in this field. I guess this might be because at the time I simply did not know this ever existed, how it could be called and I never imagined you could make a living as a « art graphic designer ». What is a graphic designer? I only knew what a street designer was. I turned toward territorial arrangemments studies then management and business studies. But then fate always catches up and from a shop assistant in hawaiSurf, i started to work as a DTP assistant for the same store. By fidling with this new field, they started to give me the outlines to do then asked me to handle the newsletter, then two, then they gave me adds to realize...to end up making skateboard promodels. So I really just learned the job on my own and I really have to thank the team that enabled me to do so and who gave me this great opportunity. Besides my job and by being a member of a rock band I also had to work on record sleeves for demos and flyers for concerts which helpled me a bunch developping my skills.

Today can you live of your art or do you have another activity besides this?

I am not just a graphic designer but in a way it is for the best since it enables me from doing what I like and gives me a lot of freedom in all my works. When one has to to eat, it is very hard to only do what one just likes doing. So I am not over productive in this matter because I have a lot of other things to handle in order for our company to grow but I definitely feel free.

Do you work on a regular basis with newspapers/fanzines?

No, i still not have had the chance to work with them as of yet but who knows what the future deserves.

Could you describe a typical day?

Well, I start by dropping my elder son to the kindergarden then run off to the office where I start by answering my emails...it is a big part of my job since we working a lot though internet. After it depends of what we have to do, it could be accounting, guitar sanding, doing research and ordering new guitar parts and hopefully pretty often working on Illustrator to create new logos, visuals for Wild or buddies and developping new ideas for future posters. The evening between two hugs from my sons, i keep on answering customer emails and go on playing with illustrator.

Where does your inspiration come from? Do you have artists/graphic designers for references (who are your influences?)

Clearly my two main references are Shepard Fairey (Obey) and Jim Philips. I also love stefan Doitschinoff (Calma) in a more religious southern american style. I also love John Dyer Baizley who besides being a fantastic artist ( modern style but darker) is also the guitar player of one of my favorite band, Baroness. However these are only the most famous artists among the wide community of graphic designers who really kick asses! There are so many others with an original style and great ideas...this is this very true diversity and large variety that makes it interesting and which gives tremendous pleasure discovering new posters.

What are the different steps in your work (from the sketch to the finished piece)?

I first start by sketching the core of the poster which is the main element, the theme, and decorative details. Then, I scan the whole piece then test little by little different things on Illustrator which takes a lot of my time. If I had followed some kind of training, i would be more organized and efficient in the process and method! But sometimes feeling and freestyle just feel quite good and it brings soul to things.

Are you doing everything by hand or are you using a computer?

Actually i use both, trying to do more and more by hand! I also want to start tattooing (which i aleady started) so it is important to draw and to keep working by hand. For that matter, all the tattoo Kustom and rock n roll culture is also a big influence.

How long does it take you to create a poster?

Arghh, this question kills me and could me stop doing what I do, i would rather not think of this!!! « Lol » as we said. I really do not know but definitely two much time if we had to make a living out of it

Who handles silkscreen printings?

know a very cool print worker at the end of the road where our workshop is located but I have to admit i wish I could do the whole process on my own...we will see when I will be retired.

You have a very distinctive style, do you only do what you like or if tomorrow one comes and asks you an oil painting of horses running into the sea in the sunset, are you ok to do it?

Of course, i will not do it! I only do what I like and tries to adapt to the request still with a maximum of freedom; since i do not feel obligated, if I do not feel comfortable with the theme, just pass; i really think that if you reluctantly do something, you will make shit! And we have the same reasoning when it comes to our guitars.

With which bands have you collaborated?

Mainly indie music, in particular « Picture me dead blondie » which is my brother's band...so it is a pleasure/work. I also worked with Herscher (doom), Sofy Major (HxC Noise), Sinner Sinners (Horror Punk)...there are others but for now I only work for buddies which already keeps me pretty busy!!!

For which bands would you like to work?

I do not have any specific ambition toward this, I am just glad I am doing what I like but setting my sights high, i would not spit on making a poster for Metallica or foo Fighters

Who choose the theme, the bands or you?

Well first i pick the bands i want to work with and usually I have free hand. Bands ask me posters because they like my style and ideas.

What is the most complicated part in making a poster?

To say "stop, it is finished"

Do you consider yourself belonging to a specific graphic scene and if yes who else do you think is part of it?

No, I do not think I am part of a specific scene, I do not meet that many people and therefore not really in the public eye so I guess I have a more marginal approach. Now maybe some of my creations do look like other designer pieces which I think is hard to avoid but now saying in which style or scene I am part of...well, i do not know.

What is the best compliment you have heard lately?

I want you to tattoo me! (although the only thing i have tattooed so far is a simple typo on my ankle). I guess it means that people trust me through my creations which is very nice..but still ;-)

what shall wish you for the future?

For Wild to end up buying off Gibson and to do next Foo Fighters record sleeve and to also make Dave Grohl's guitar for this new record...do you think it is something feasible?
