Hello, of course as every Crewk interview, first question: what are we listening to when we come to visit you?

Hi, i usually listen a lot of music..... at this moment i'm listening Maggot Brain from Funkadelic.

Can you tell us more about yourself, who are you, where are you from, what do you do?

I'm Alessio Rotulo a 26 years old graphic designer from Naples,Italy. When i wake up in the morning i start to draw, play guitar, draw, play guitar, draw, play guitar and draw!Oh, sometimes i work for an advertising agency.

When did you start drawing?

I started drawing when i was a child, i copied a lot of character from the comics i loved, when i was to High school my schoolbook turned in to my sketchbook!

Did you follow any course or did you improve by drawing in the margins of your schoolbooks?

I'm a complete autodidact, but when i was 22 years old i followed a course to use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe photoshop....and i turn my passion in a job.

Today are you living from your art, or do you do something else for a living ?

No, my art doesn't give me a lot of money....because of this i work for an advertising agency like a freelance graphic designer, i do a lot of logos, brochures, flyers, website layouts, corporate identity....Is a good job and i learn a lot about graphic then i use for poster art.

Are you collaborating with magazines/fanzines, regularly?

No i never collaborate for a magazines, but i'd like collaborate wit some....usually i read a lot o free press, but i never try to contact them; my favourite is Vice magazine.

Where does your influence come from? Is there any artists/graphists you particularly like, what are your influences?

My influences comes to comics, i'm very addicted to comics art.I really love Katsuhiro Otomo the creator of cyberpunk manga "Akira" and Naoki Urasawa the creator of "20Th century Boys" manga.
My office is full of Norman Rockwell illustration and i really love he's style.

What are the principal steps in your work?

I start to draw with a marker a character that could be good for the theme of the poster, then i use the scanner and i turn my character in a vectorial draw and i start to color, then i place the character colored in Photoshop and i start to elaborate the background.

Do you do everything by hand or on computer?

I prefer draw the character by hand for two reason: i love draw with my marker and i hate stay all the day in face of a monitor...but after drawing my character the use of the computer is essential.

How long does it take you to do a poster?

Is not the same time for all poster.I'm very fast to draw with the marker, but sometimes i'm not happy about what i did, and i draw the same poster two or three times

You have a very distinctive style, are you doing only what you feel like or if tomorrow somebody asks you an oil painting with horses running out of water with a sunset backdrop, is it a problem or are you up for it ?

...The problem is not the subject to draw, i can draw everything but....just in my style..ahah.If you want some realistic draw....i'm sorry but i'm not your man.
But if you want a zombie horse that play guitar for me could be very interesting!

For which band have you already worked for?

Usually i don't work for band, but for the live show club that present the event. And sometimes for some cover band or some dj.

For which band would you love to work?

One years ago i went in Rome to listen the australian Guitarist Xavier Rudd, he is an amazing guitarist and could be very nice draw a poster for him, but there is a lot of band that i'd like to draw!

Do you choose the artists yourself?

No, the manager of the event contact me.

What is the most difficult part in designing a poster ?

The difficult part is when you see the poster finished and it doesn't looks like when was in your mind...

Do you think you are part of a "Graphic Scene", if so who else ?

I'm just a Rock&Roll lovers, with a passion with comics and caricature.....

A bit of self-promotion, take advantage of it, it's free, where can we see your work , on the web or in real life?
